Napa vs. Sonoma for Your Wedding: An Honest Comparison

We represent properties in both valleys, so we have no stake in the Napa vs Sonoma wedding debate — only in getting you to the right one. The short version: Napa is polished and compact; Sonoma is varied and relaxed. Nearly everything else follows from that.
The feel of each
Napa is a thirty-mile corridor of manicured estates, world-famous labels and hospitality trained to a very high standard. It feels like an occasion the moment you arrive.
Sonoma is roughly four times the land area with a dozen distinct pockets — Dry Creek, Alexander Valley, the Russian River, Bennett Valley, the coast. It feels agricultural, informal and, for many couples, more personal.
Cost differences
Expect Napa to run 10–20% higher for a comparable wedding. The gap widens on lodging: a Napa hotel block in October is a real burden on guests, while Healdsburg, Santa Rosa and Petaluma offer more range.
Scenery and venue styles
- Napa: valley-floor wineries, wine caves, architectural estates, cypress-lined drives.
- Sonoma: hilltop ranches, redwood groves, olive orchards, coastal fog, working family wineries.
Guest travel and lodging
Napa is about 75 minutes from SFO and 60 from OAK; Sonoma County has its own airport (STS) with direct flights from several western cities, which surprises a lot of couples. Sonoma venues are more spread out, so shuttle planning matters more.
Who each is best for
We represent both, so the useful next step is not choosing a region — it is telling us your guest count, season and budget and letting the shortlist answer the question for you.
- Choose Napa if: you want a recognisable name, a compact guest experience and polish end to end.
- Choose Sonoma if: you want more land, more character per dollar and a weekend that feels like a private gathering.
