The Best Time of Year for a Wine Country Wedding

Golden vineyard rows at harvest, the best time of year for a wine country wedding

There is no single best time of year for a wine country wedding — there is a best time for your priorities. Warmth, vine colour, guest cost and availability all peak at different moments, and knowing the trade-offs is what lets you book confidently.

Here is how the calendar actually behaves in Napa and Sonoma.

Season by season

  • Spring (April–May): mustard has faded, hills are emerald, vines are budding. Mild days, small rain risk, excellent value.
  • Summer (June–August): reliably dry and hot — 90°F+ inland afternoons. Vines are full and green. Plan for shade and a late ceremony.
  • Harvest (September–October): the icon. Golden light, fruit on the vine, warm evenings. Also the most expensive and first to book out.
  • Late fall (November): vines turn red and gold, crowds vanish, prices soften. Short daylight is the trade.
  • Winter (December–March): quiet, dramatic, cheap — but rain plans stop being optional.

Harvest season, in detail

September and October are booked 12–18 months ahead at most of our properties. Working wineries may restrict access during crush, and the smell and noise of production is either the romance you wanted or the surprise you did not. Ask any winery venue directly how crush affects your date.

Weather and daylight at a glance

  • April: 70°F high, sunset ~7:45pm, moderate rain risk
  • June: 85°F high, sunset ~8:35pm, essentially no rain
  • September: 88°F high, sunset ~7:20pm, no rain, golden vines
  • October: 80°F high, sunset ~6:35pm, low rain risk, peak colour
  • November: 68°F high, sunset ~5:00pm, rising rain risk

Cost and availability by month

Peak pricing runs May–October, with September and October at the top. Shoulder months — April and November — commonly save 15–25% on the site fee, and off-season winter dates can save more. Fridays and Sundays discount every month of the year.

The best months for photographs

Late September through early November. The sun sits lower, the vines are gold and red, and golden hour arrives at a civilised time — around 6pm rather than 8:30pm, which means your dinner is not built around the light.

Frequently asked

What is the best month for a Napa wedding?
October — warm days, golden vines, low rain risk and a manageable sunset time. It is also the most competitive month, so book 12–18 months out.
Can you get married in wine country in winter?
Yes, and it can be beautiful and far more affordable. You will need a genuine indoor or tented rain plan from December through March.
